Crops We Certify

En Espaņol

View a list of Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

The Rainforest Alliance and Sustainable Agriculture Network carefully chooses the crops that we certify, focusing on export commodities that directly affect the economies, cultures, politics and environments of developing countries. Currently we have social and environmental standards for coffee, tea, bananas, cocoa, citrus, ferns and cut flowers. These crops are the engines of development and major employers in many areas of extraordinary cultural and biological diversity, often growing where tropical forests once thrived.

While for centuries, people have cleared land to grow food, most widespread deforestation in Latin America occurred during the mid- 1970s, when diverse tropical ecosystems were replaced with sterile monocultures and cattle pastures.

The Rainforest Alliance seeks to minimize the environmental impacts and maximize the social benefits of tropical agriculture by working with growers and buyers alike. Along with our partner groups in the Sustainable Agriculture Network, we have demonstrated that properly managed and certified farms can be important and positive elements in local and regional conservation and sustainable development strategies. Cocoa and coffee farms, in particular, can serve to buffer parks, protect watersheds and connect wildlands.
